Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (22 cm) cake pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, and vanilla sugar until light and fluffy.
Melt the butter, then stir in the orange juice and orange zest.
Grate the apple and squeeze out any excess moisture.
Combine the dry and wet ingredients, then gently fold in the grated apple. Mix carefully until just combined; do not overmix.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then carefully remove it and place it on a wire rack to cool completely.
Before serving, dust with powdered sugar or garnish with fresh orange slices.
