Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a cake pan.
Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then add the eggs one at a time.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the grated apple.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool completely in the pan before frosting.
Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave. Stir in the heavy cream and vanilla extract until smooth.
Frost the top and sides of the cooled cake with the chocolate cream using a spatula to create a smooth finish.
Garnish the cake with fresh apple slices or chocolate shavings. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
