Apple cinnamon naan bread served

Apple Cinnamon Naan

Apple and cinnamon is a classic combination, one of the most popular flavor pairings in the colder months. In this recipe, this sweet duo is hidden in a soft naan dough, bringing together the warmth of home and the special character of Indian bread. As the naan bakes, the apple softens inside, caramelizing slightly, and the cinnamon adds a fragrant spiciness – the whole kitchen is filled with the scent of fresh pastry. Tip: Always squeeze out the apple, otherwise the filling will be too wet and soak the dough. If you like, you can also add a little brown sugar to the filling. This naan is an ideal choice as a dessert, snack or a special breakfast. Serve it with honey or a little vanilla yogurt.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Peel and grate the apple. Squeeze out any excess juice using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.

    2

In a bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon. This will form the sweet and spicy base of the naan.

    3

Add the yogurt, lukewarm water, and olive oil. Knead until you have a smooth, elastic dough.

    4

Knead the dough for at least 10 minutes. If it's too sticky, add a little flour. The dough should be soft but not stick to your hands.

    5

Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    6

Divide the risen dough into 6 portions. Shape them into balls and roll them out into oval shapes.

    7

Place a portion of grated apple on one half of the dough. Fold the other half over the apple, and gently roll it out again, pressing down slightly.

    8

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the naans for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown spots appear.

    9

While still warm, brush with melted butter – this enhances the flavor of the cinnamon and apple, and gives the surface a silky shine.

    10

Serve warm, either on its own or sprinkled with a little powdered sugar. A great choice for breakfast or dessert.
