In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
Divide the meat into four equal portions, then shape them into thick patties. Make sure they are slightly larger than the buns, as they will shrink during cooking.
Heat a skillet or grill to medium-high heat, then brush with a little olive oil.
Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, until nicely browned. For a medium-rare burger, cook for an additional 2 minutes per side.
During the last minute of cooking time, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and let it melt.
In another skillet, cook the bacon slices over medium heat until crispy, then drain on paper towels.
Halve the hamburger buns, then lightly toast them in a dry skillet or on a grill.
Spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun, then top with a lettuce leaf.
Place the cheesy patty on top, then add two slices of crispy bacon.
Add tomato slices, onion rings, and gherkin slices, then drizzle with ketchup and mustard.
Top with the other half of the bun, and serve immediately with fries or coleslaw.
