If using dried beans, soak them overnight and then cook until tender in plenty of water. If using canned beans, rinse and drain them.
Finely chop the onion and garlic. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Sauté the onion over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, then add the garlic and sauté for another minute, until fragrant.
Stir in the tomato paste, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Pour in the water and mix thoroughly.
Add the cooked or drained beans and stir well to ensure they are evenly coated with the sauce.
Simmer over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
Serve warm as a side dish alongside grilled foods, or piled on a slice of toast for a satisfying meal.
