Soak the chickpeas in plenty of water overnight until softened. If using canned chickpeas, rinse them thoroughly.
Peel and chop the red onion and garlic. Finely chop the parsley and cilantro.
In a food processor, purée the chickpeas with the onion, garlic, spices, and fresh herbs. Don't over-process; leave it slightly chunky.
Mix in the chickpea flour to help the mixture bind. If it's too wet, you can add a little more flour.
With wet hands, form small falafel balls or flattened patties. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the falafel with olive oil, then grill them on a preheated grill rack or grill pan over medium heat for 5-6 minutes per side, until golden brown.
Once the falafel is grilled, brush with BBQ sauce and grill for another 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Serve with fresh salad, pita bread, or hummus, and enjoy the smoky BBQ flavor!
