BBQ grilled falafel served

BBQ Grilled Falafel

Falafel originally comes from the Middle East and is known as one of the most popular vegan dishes. Instead of the traditionally deep-fried version, this BBQ grilled falafel is a healthier, but equally delicious alternative. Grilling gives the falafel a slightly smoky flavor that harmonizes perfectly with the BBQ sauce. It is an ideal choice for summer barbecues or a light vegetarian lunch. Tip: If you want an even more intense BBQ flavor, try enhancing the aroma with smoked paprika or a little liquid smoke.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Soak the chickpeas in plenty of water overnight until softened. If using canned chickpeas, rinse them thoroughly.

    2

Peel and chop the red onion and garlic. Finely chop the parsley and cilantro.

    3

In a food processor, purée the chickpeas with the onion, garlic, spices, and fresh herbs. Don't over-process; leave it slightly chunky.

    4

Mix in the chickpea flour to help the mixture bind. If it's too wet, you can add a little more flour.

    5

With wet hands, form small falafel balls or flattened patties. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

    6

Brush the falafel with olive oil, then grill them on a preheated grill rack or grill pan over medium heat for 5-6 minutes per side, until golden brown.

    7

Once the falafel is grilled, brush with BBQ sauce and grill for another 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

    8

Serve with fresh salad, pita bread, or hummus, and enjoy the smoky BBQ flavor!
