Peel the red onions and cut them in half or into thick slices.
In a bowl, combine the olive oil, smoked paprika, brown sugar, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Thoroughly coat the onions with this mixture.
Preheat the grill to medium heat, then place the onions on the grill grates. Cook for 5-7 minutes, until caramelized and slightly softened.
Flip the onions and brush with BBQ sauce. Grill for an additional 3-5 minutes, allowing the sauce to caramelize slightly.
Remove from the grill and drizzle with balsamic vinegar before serving to balance the sweet and smoky flavors.
Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot alongside steak, grilled meats, or french fries, or as a burger topping.
