In a bowl, mash the black beans with a fork, leaving some chunkier pieces for texture.
Finely chop the red onion and garlic. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Sauté the onion for 2-3 minutes, then add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
In a bowl, combine the mashed black beans, sautéed onion and garlic, BBQ sauce, smoked paprika, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
Stir in the breadcrumbs and flaxseed meal. Let the mixture rest for 5 minutes to bind.
Form the mixture into 4 evenly sized patties.
Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and lightly oil the grates.
Place the burger patties on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crispy.
Meanwhile, halve the hamburger buns and grill them for 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted.
Assemble the burgers: spread vegan mayonnaise on the buns, add a lettuce leaf, the grilled black bean patty, a slice of tomato, and finally the top bun.
Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as grilled potatoes or a fresh salad.
