Toast the sunflower seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Let them cool completely.
Finely chop the onion and garlic. Sauté them in 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pan over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
In a food processor, combine the toasted sunflower seeds, rolled oats, sautéed onion and garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper and pulse until coarsely ground.
Add 50 ml of water and mix until the mixture comes together and can be easily shaped.
Form the mixture into small patties. Brush both sides of the patties with a little olive oil.
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If necessary, lightly oil the grill grates.
Place the sunflower seed patties on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until lightly charred and firm.
During the last 2 minutes of grilling, brush both sides of the patties with BBQ sauce. Continue grilling for 1 minute to allow the sauce to caramelize.
Serve warm with fresh salad, grilled vegetables, or in a bun as a vegetarian burger.
