BBQ grilled sunflower seed patties served

BBQ Grilled Sunflower Seed Patties

Grilled sunflower seed patties are a unique and delicious vegetarian alternative to classic meat patties. The toasted sunflower seeds give the dish a nutty, deep flavor, while the rolled oats and soy sauce perfectly bind the mixture. Grilling gives them a smoky, slightly crispy exterior, which is further enhanced by the BBQ sauce. This recipe is perfect for summer barbecues, as a vegetarian burger, or as a light dinner. For an even more exciting flavor, try it with avocado cream or garlic yogurt dip.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Toast the sunflower seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Let them cool completely.

    2

Finely chop the onion and garlic. Sauté them in 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pan over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until softened.

    3

In a food processor, combine the toasted sunflower seeds, rolled oats, sautéed onion and garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper and pulse until coarsely ground.

    4

Add 50 ml of water and mix until the mixture comes together and can be easily shaped.

    5

Form the mixture into small patties. Brush both sides of the patties with a little olive oil.

    6

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If necessary, lightly oil the grill grates.

    7

Place the sunflower seed patties on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until lightly charred and firm.

    8

During the last 2 minutes of grilling, brush both sides of the patties with BBQ sauce. Continue grilling for 1 minute to allow the sauce to caramelize.

    9

Serve warm with fresh salad, grilled vegetables, or in a bun as a vegetarian burger.
