Toast the walnuts in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Let them cool.
Finely chop the red onion and garlic. Sauté them in 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
In a food processor, pulse the toasted walnuts, cooked brown lentils, and sautéed onion and garlic until coarsely ground.
Add the breadcrumbs, soy sauce, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized burger patties. Lightly brush them with olive oil.
Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. If necessary, lightly oil the grill grates.
Place the walnut burger patties on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly charred.
During the last 2 minutes of grilling, brush the patties with BBQ sauce. Cook for another 1 minute, allowing the sauce to caramelize.
Serve warm on fresh buns with lettuce, tomato, and extra BBQ sauce, or enjoy as a standalone dish with a fresh salad.
