Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) or prepare a grill for medium heat.
Peel the onions and cut them into thick slices or rings.
In a bowl, combine the olive oil, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
Toss the onion slices in the BBQ spice mixture to coat them evenly.
Place the onion rings on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, or directly onto the grill grates.
Bake or grill for 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally, until the onions are tender and caramelized.
Before serving, drizzle with a little extra BBQ sauce for a more intense flavor.
