Peel and grate the fresh ginger and garlic. The finer you grate them, the better they will release their flavor into the marinade.
In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, olive oil, and rice vinegar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Add the grated ginger and garlic, then sprinkle in the smoked paprika and black pepper. Mix well to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed.
Place the meats or vegetables you wish to marinate in a resealable bag or bowl, then pour the marinade over them. Make sure to coat all of the ingredients thoroughly.
Cover the bowl or seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
Before using, remove the marinated ingredients from the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to ensure even cooking during grilling.
