Broccoli bao bun served

Broccoli Bao Buns

Many people only know broccoli in soups or stews, but it is also perfect for modern, fusion street food dishes. In Asian cuisines, broccoli is a common ingredient in wok dishes, where it is stir-fried in soy sauce and sesame oil for an intense flavor. In this recipe, the broccoli is not only steamed until tender but also lightly stir-fried to keep its texture pleasantly crunchy. The combination of garlic and soy sauce is classic yet always works. The softness of the steamed bao perfectly balances the crispness of the broccoli. As the garlic sauce and broccoli blend together in the pan, the aromas instantly transport you to an East Asian kitchen. This bao bun is ideal as a meat-free dish for weekdays, but it's also suitable for special entertaining. If you crave extra flavor, you can sprinkle toasted nuts or peanuts on top!

    Preparation Steps

    1

Wash the broccoli florets. Blanch them in boiling, salted water for 2 minutes. Immediately drain and cool in cold water to preserve their bright green color.

    2

Heat the sesame oil in a skillet. Add the finely chopped garlic and, after 30 seconds, add the broccoli. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes.

    3

Pour in the soy sauce and lemon juice, toss thoroughly, and remove from heat. Tip: a pinch of chili flakes adds a pleasant kick!

    4

Cut the carrot into julienne strips and shred the lettuce. These will provide a crunchy and fresh layer inside the bao buns.

    5

Steam the bao buns in a bamboo steamer or through a metal sieve, covered, for 6-8 minutes. Do not open them during steaming to prevent the steam from escaping!

    6

Open the soft bao buns, place lettuce and carrots on the bottom, then spoon on the garlic soy sauce broccoli.

    7

Sprinkle with black sesame seeds and microgreens. Serve immediately while warm and the broccoli is fresh and crunchy.
