Buñuelo Spanish fritters with cinnamon sugar

Buñuelo

Buñuelos are a traditional Spanish and Latin American sweet treat, often made during festive seasons. In Spain and Mexico, they are particularly popular at Christmas, but many variations exist in other countries as well. This light, deep-fried dough has a crispy exterior and soft interior, most often served with cinnamon sugar or honey. Making them at home brings a truly traditional delight to the table!

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

    2

In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and melted butter, then gradually add it to the dry ingredients.

    3

Knead the dough until it's soft but manageable. If it's too sticky, add a little flour.

    4

On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 3 mm thick. Use a glass or cookie cutter to cut out round shapes.

    5

Heat the oil over medium-high heat. Fry the buñuelos until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.

    6

Remove the fried buñuelos and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

    7

While still warm, toss them in cinnamon sugar to coat evenly.

    8

Serve immediately, or enjoy fresh, with honey or chocolate sauce.
