Peel and thinly slice the red onions. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter, add the onions, and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cook over low heat for 15 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and a deep golden brown.
Prepare the vegetables: wash the lettuce leaves and slice the tomatoes into thin rounds.
Season the beef patties with salt and pepper on both sides. Preheat a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until a golden-brown crust forms.
When the patties are almost done, place a slice of cheddar on each and cover the skillet to let the cheese melt.
Toast the hamburger buns in a skillet or on a grill, until the cut sides are golden brown and crispy.
Assemble the burgers: spread mayonnaise on the bottom bun, top with lettuce, the cheesy beef patty, and a generous helping of caramelized onions. Add tomato slices, then top with the upper bun.
Gently press down and serve immediately with fries or a fresh salad.
