Chai Latte Stollen sliced, with spiced dough

Chai Latte Stollen

The chai latte spice blend – cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger – has been used in India for centuries and has become popular worldwide in recent years as a warm beverage. This distinctive flavor now appears in the German-origin Stollen. The warmth of the chai perfectly complements the classic buttery dough, which is especially well-suited for the winter season. It's the perfect Christmas treat or gift, and its aroma alone makes it festive. Tip: You can even use freshly ground spices for an even more intense flavor.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Sift the flour into a large bowl, then add the yeast, sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger. Mix well to combine. This will create the chai latte flavor profile.

    2

Add the warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Knead until you have a soft, slightly sticky dough. If needed, add a little more flour.

    3

Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    4

Knead the dried fruits into the risen dough, distributing them evenly so they are in every slice.

    5

Shape the stollen: roll the dough into an oval shape, then fold one edge lengthwise over the other, so it slightly covers the other side.

    6

Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rest for another 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) with conventional heat.

    7

Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until golden brown. If it's browning too quickly, cover with parchment paper. Cool completely.

    8

Dust with powdered sugar. Tip: Letting it sit for 1-2 days makes it even more delicious as the spices meld together.
