Freshly baked cheese pretzel

Cheese Pretzels

Cheese pretzels are a popular variation of traditional German pretzels, and have been happily adopted by Hungarian cuisine. The grated cheese not only enhances the appearance but also the flavor of this pastry, which remains crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The shape of the pretzel dates back to the Middle Ages, with symbolic meaning, and has now become a popular choice in artisan bakeries. Served warm, it is especially delicious, ideal for welcoming guests or as a snack with a hearty soup.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a large bowl, combine the flour, active dry yeast, sugar, and salt. Add the lukewarm water and melted butter, then mix until a smooth dough forms.

    2

Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes, until it becomes elastic and smooth. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    3

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, then shape them into classic pretzel shapes.

    4

Bring 1 liter of water to a boil, remove from heat, and add the baking soda (be careful, it will fizz!). Dip each pretzel into the baking soda solution for 30 seconds, then place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

    5

Sprinkle the tops of the pretzels with grated cheese, making sure it adheres well to the surface.

    6

Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-18 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Serve warm and enjoy!
