Prepare the vegetables: wash the lettuce leaves, slice the tomatoes and red onion into thin rings. Place everything on a plate for later use.
Season the beef patties with salt and pepper on both sides. Preheat a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until a golden-brown crust forms.
When the patties are almost done, place a slice of cheddar on each and cover to allow the cheese to melt. This helps the flavors meld together, and the cheese will become creamy.
Halve the hamburger buns and toast the inside in a skillet or on a grill pan until lightly golden brown and crispy.
Assemble the burgers: spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of the bun, place the lettuce leaf, the cheesy patty, tomato and red onion on top. Add ketchup and mustard to taste.
Place the top half of the bun on top and gently press down. Serve immediately with french fries or a fresh salad.
