Chicken Paprikash is a dish that is present in every Hungarian household. According to the traditional recipe, the chicken is cooked in a paprika and onion-based sauce, and when served, the paprika sauce is accompanied by fresh nokedli or rice. Chicken Paprikash is relatively easy to prepare, yet the richness of flavors and the peculiarity of the spicy paprika make it truly special. The dish is one of the best-known and most popular dishes of Hungarian gastronomy, which gives any meal a cozy and mouth-watering atmosphere.
Finely chop the onions and garlic, then sauté them in oil until softened.
Add the chicken drumsticks and sear them on all sides until golden brown.
Sprinkle with Hungarian sweet paprika, salt, and pepper. Pour in the water, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until the chicken is tender.
In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream with a little of the cooking liquid, then stir it into the chicken. Cook for another 5-10 minutes.
Serve hot with nokedli (Hungarian dumplings) or pasta.
