Halve the tomatoes, finely chop the onion, and crush the garlic.
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place the tomatoes cut-side down on the grill.
Grill the tomatoes for 5-7 minutes, or until they are slightly caramelized and have a smoky flavor.
In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic until softened and translucent.
Add the grilled tomatoes, BBQ sauce, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and chili flakes to the saucepan.
Simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Use an immersion blender to purée the sauce until smooth. Add more salt or spices to taste, if needed.
Let cool, then serve with grilled meats, grilled vegetables, or sandwiches.
