Classic Belgian waffles served

Classic Belgian Waffles

The Belgian waffle, also known as the 'Liège waffle', is one of the most famous desserts in Belgium. They were originally made in the late 18th century as a sweeter, crispier version, which has since become known worldwide. The special feature of the traditional Belgian waffle batter is that it is made with a delicious, sweet yeast dough, which is baked to a golden brown crispiness.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Prepare the ingredients: measure out the flour, sugar, and vanilla sugar. Dissolve the yeast in lukewarm milk with a pinch of sugar, then let it rest for 10 minutes until foamy.

    2

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and vanilla sugar. Make a well in the center, and pour in the yeast mixture, followed by the eggs and melted butter.

    3

Start mixing the ingredients together with a wooden spoon or hand whisk. Slowly add the milk until you get a smooth, frothy batter.

    4

Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the batter rest in a warm place for 1 hour, until it has doubled in size.

    5

Once the batter has risen, preheat your waffle iron. If you don't have a waffle iron, you can use a pancake griddle.

    6

Pour the batter into the waffle iron, being careful not to overfill it, as the waffles will expand during cooking. Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown.

    7

Remove the cooked waffles from the iron and serve fresh with berries, powdered sugar, or any other favorite toppings.
