Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a 9-inch (22 cm) cake pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Melt the butter and bittersweet chocolate in a double boiler or microwave. Let cool for a few minutes.
In another bowl, whisk the eggs, then add the milk and vanilla extract. Whisk in the melted chocolate and butter mixture.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with melted chocolate, or top with fresh fruit before serving, if desired.
