In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it stand for 10 minutes, until foamy.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
Add the yeast mixture and lard (or butter) to the flour mixture, and knead until a smooth, elastic dough forms.
Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Divide the risen dough into two equal portions, and shape them into long, oval loaves.
Place the shaped loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the breads for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Let cool slightly, then slice and serve fresh with butter or as a sandwich.
