Freshly baked Cuban bread

Cuban Bread

Cuban bread is a staple in Cuban communities of Florida. The original recipe was brought by Spanish and Italian immigrants, and over the years it has become a fundamental element of Cuban cuisine. This bread is known for its crispy crust and soft, airy interior. It's most often used as the base for the famous Cuban sandwich (Cubano), which is made with pork, ham, cheese and mustard. Cuban bread is best fresh, but it's also perfect the next day as toast or sandwich bread.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it stand for 10 minutes, until foamy.

    2

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.

    3

Add the yeast mixture and lard (or butter) to the flour mixture, and knead until a smooth, elastic dough forms.

    4

Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    5

Divide the risen dough into two equal portions, and shape them into long, oval loaves.

    6

Place the shaped loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.

    7

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the breads for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

    8

Let cool slightly, then slice and serve fresh with butter or as a sandwich.
