Combine the ground beef with salt, pepper, and other desired seasonings. Form into four large patties.
Heat some oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, until nicely browned and cooked through.
Halve the hamburger buns and lightly grill or toast them until golden brown.
Place the cheddar cheese slices on top of the cooked patties and cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and gooey.
On each bun bottom, place a lettuce leaf, a slice of tomato, and then the double patties topped with melted cheese.
Spread ketchup and mustard on the top bun, then close the burger.
Serve the hamburger with fresh sides, such as french fries or a crisp salad.
