Finely chop the onion and garlic. In a large bowl, combine the ground duck meat, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion and garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
Divide the mixture into four equal-sized patties. Slightly flatten them to prevent excessive shrinking during cooking.
Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the surface and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, until nicely browned and cooked through.
In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and cover to allow the cheese to melt.
Halve the hamburger buns and lightly toast the cut sides in a dry skillet.
Spread a little mayonnaise and Dijon mustard on the bottom bun. Add a lettuce leaf, followed by the cheese-melted duck patty. Top with thinly sliced tomato, and finally, the top bun.
Serve the assembled burger immediately, and offer with french fries or other side dishes.
