Creamy eggnog grog in a mug with cinnamon

Eggnog Grog

Grog was originally a spirit drink supplied to sailors in the British Navy, to serve as a warming and fortifying beverage on cold days. Over the years, many variations have emerged, including eggnog grog, which offers an even creamier and richer flavor experience. On a cold winter evening, there's nothing better than a cup of hot eggnog grog, which both warms and indulges with its harmonious combination of spices and rum. The natural silkiness of the egg, the caramel sweetness of the brown sugar, and the spice of cinnamon and cloves create a perfect balance. The secret to perfect eggnog grog is mixing at low temperatures – if it gets too hot, the egg may curdle. If you want an even richer flavor, try it with a little vanilla extract or a pinch of cardamom. This drink is an ideal choice for a cold winter evening, holiday gatherings, or a special, warming drink at the end of a long day.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Pour the water into a medium saucepan and begin to heat over medium heat.

    2

Add the brown sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, and nutmeg. Stir to combine, then let it warm until the sugar is completely dissolved.

    3

Pour in the freshly squeezed lemon juice, then stir to allow the flavors to meld.

    4

In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolk until it is slightly frothy.

    5

While whisking constantly, slowly drizzle the hot mixture into the egg yolk, ensuring the egg doesn't curdle, but thickens the drink nicely.

    6

Pour everything back into the saucepan and continue to stir over low heat for a few minutes until it thickens slightly. Do not boil!

    7

Finally, add the rum and stir thoroughly.

    8

Strain the drink, then pour into a mug or heat-resistant glass. Serve hot, optionally garnished with a cinnamon stick.
