Peel and finely mince the garlic cloves. In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat, then add the minced garlic. Sauté gently until golden brown and fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
Prepare the vegetables: wash the lettuce leaves, and slice the tomatoes and red onion into thin rounds.
Season the beef patties with salt and black pepper on both sides. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through.
In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt.
Toast the hamburger buns in a skillet or on a grill until the cut sides are golden brown and crispy.
Assemble the burgers: spread the toasted cut side of the bottom bun with the garlic butter. Layer with lettuce leaves, the cheesy beef patty, tomato slices, and red onion rings.
Add a dollop of mayonnaise on top, and then top with the other half of the bun. Serve immediately with fries or garlic aioli.
