Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Prepare two cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, until a smooth batter forms.
Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack.
For the frosting, beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped heavy cream.
Layer the cake layers with the cream cheese frosting. Frost the top and sides of the cake with a thin, even layer.
To create the geode effect, cut out a small section from one side of the cake and fill it with colored sanding sugar. Arrange the sugars in a gradient pattern to mimic a natural geode.
Use gold and blue food coloring to paint the edges around the geode section, creating a realistic, natural-looking effect.
Refrigerate the cake for at least one hour before serving to allow the decorations to set.
