Honey-walnut burek baked golden brown, drizzled with honey syrup

Honey-Walnut Burek

Walnut burek, also known as sweet burek, is a traditional Balkan dessert that is similar to baklava in many ways. It is a frequent guest or festive pastry in the Balkan region, combining the natural sweetness of walnuts and honey with the crispy texture of filo pastry. The honey-walnut version is especially popular during holidays, bringing warmth to homes with its rich flavor and aroma. Imagine the smell of freshly baked burek filling the kitchen as the honey syrup slowly soaks into the crispy layers. The secret to success is fresh, high-quality walnuts and drizzling the burek with warm syrup while it's still hot, making it truly juicy. This burek is a perfect choice as a dessert at the end of a festive dinner or as an afternoon snack.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a bowl, combine the ground walnuts, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. This will be the sweet, crunchy filling for the burek. Tip: Use freshly ground walnuts for a more intense flavor.

    2

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) using the upper and lower heating elements. Prepare a medium-sized baking pan and line it with parchment paper.

    3

Lay out one filo pastry sheet, brush it with melted butter, then place another sheet on top and brush it with butter as well. Sprinkle the walnut mixture along one long edge of the pastry, then roll it up into a burek shape – either a spiral or a log. Repeat the process with the remaining sheets.

    4

Place the bureks in the baking pan and brush their tops with melted butter. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown. Tip: Avoid opening the oven frequently, as the pastry can easily collapse!

    5

Meanwhile, prepare the honey syrup: in a small saucepan, heat the honey, lemon juice, and water over medium heat until the honey is completely dissolved. Do not boil, just stir until combined.

    6

As soon as the burek is baked, immediately drizzle it with the warm honey syrup while it's still hot. Important: Don't wait for it to cool down, or it won't absorb the syrup properly!

    7

Let it stand for at least 15 minutes to allow the syrup to soak in, then slice and serve warm or cold. You can also sprinkle it with powdered sugar.
