Jam-filled buns are a pastry that has enjoyed great popularity in Hungarian households for decades. The basis of the dish is a delicious, soft dough that is filled with homemade jam and then baked in the oven until golden brown. Jam-filled buns are a truly nostalgic dessert, a must-have at every family gathering and festive meal.
Making bukta is a true traditional art, as the dough must be rested sufficiently to make it soft and light. It is best to use homemade jam for the filling, but store-bought versions also work great. Jam-filled buns are perfectly variable, with apricot jam, plum jam or even strawberry jam. The combination of the sweet, jam filling and the soft dough enchants the diner in every bite and provides a real experience for dessert lovers.
Warm the milk, add one teaspoon of sugar, then crumble in the yeast. Let it proof for 10-15 minutes until foamy.
In a bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, salt, and vanilla sugar. Add the proofed yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg.
Knead into a smooth dough. Place in a warm place and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Roll out the dough to a 1 cm thickness, then cut into rectangular pieces. Place a spoonful of jam in the center of each rectangle.
Fold the rectangles, seal the edges, and place the buns in a greased baking pan, seam-side down.
Brush the tops of the buns with a little milk, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Let cool, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
