Freshly baked homemade lavash bread

Lavash - Armenian Flatbread

Lavash is a traditional Armenian flatbread that has been a staple in Armenian and Middle Eastern cuisine for centuries. UNESCO has recognized it as part of the world's cultural heritage, as many cultural traditions are associated with its preparation and consumption. The thin, soft dough is great for sandwiches, kebabs, or simply served with dips. It is also easily made at home with a skillet, and it's a perfect alternative to store-bought versions.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the water and olive oil.

    2

Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If it's too dry, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time.

    3

Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.

    4

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions, then shape them into small balls.

    5

On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball into a thin, approximately 1-2 mm thick oval shape.

    6

Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the lavash breads one at a time for 30-40 seconds on each side, until lightly browned spots appear.

    7

As they are cooked, place them in a dish covered with a kitchen towel to keep them soft.

    8

Serve fresh, or use for sandwiches, kebabs, or other Middle Eastern dishes!
