Loukoumades served

Loukoumades

Loukoumades are a traditional Greek dessert that has been enjoyed in the Mediterranean for centuries. These golden-brown, honey-drenched dough balls are crispy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. The origin of loukoumades dates back to ancient Greece, where winners of the Olympic Games were once rewarded with honey-soaked dough. Since then, many variations have been created, but the classic recipe, sprinkled with honey and cinnamon, remains one of the most popular. If you love simple yet special sweets, you should definitely try this recipe. It's the perfect dessert for family gatherings, festive occasions, or even with a delicious Greek coffee!

    Preparation Steps

    1

Warm the water slightly, then dissolve the sugar and yeast in it. Let it stand for 10 minutes until foamy.

    2

In a large bowl, sift the flour, then add the salt and the yeast mixture. Mix until you get a sticky, soft dough.

    3

Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    4

Heat the oil in a deep pot to about 340°F (170°C). If you don't have a thermometer, drop a small piece of dough into the oil – if it slowly rises and turns golden brown, the oil is at the right temperature.

    5

Using a tablespoon, scoop small balls of dough and carefully drop them into the oil. Fry only a few at a time so the oil doesn't cool down.

    6

Fry the loukoumades for 3-4 minutes, until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Turn them occasionally.

    7

Remove the fried dough balls and place them on a paper towel to absorb the excess oil.

    8

While still warm, toss them in honey to coat them well.

    9

Sprinkle with cinnamon, toasted sesame seeds, or ground walnuts, and serve immediately.
