Golden brown mandazi served

Mandazi

Mandazi is one of East Africa's most beloved sweets, often enjoyed as breakfast or a light snack. Popular in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, it's usually served with coffee or tea. The spices, like cinnamon and cardamom, give this simple fried dough a special aroma, reminiscent of Western doughnuts in taste and texture. Some variations use coconut milk for a richer flavor, while others are served with honey or icing. Mandazi is the perfect choice if you want to try a quick and easy exotic dessert.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom.

    2

Add the butter and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

    3

Pour in the coconut milk and egg, then knead into a smooth, elastic dough.

    4

Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes at room temperature.

    5

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1 cm thickness. Cut into triangles or squares.

    6

In a deep skillet or pot, heat the oil over medium heat.

    7

Fry the mandazi pieces in the oil for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

    8

Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

    9

Serve sprinkled with powdered sugar, or dip in sweet sauces.
