Freshly steamed Chinese mantou buns

Mantou - Chinese Steamed Buns

Mantou is a traditional Chinese steamed bun that has been consumed in Asia for centuries. Originally from Northern China, where wheat was a staple food, mantou is made from simple ingredients but is very popular due to its soft, airy texture and slightly sweet taste. It is often eaten with savory dishes or on its own, and modern versions are also made with sweet fillings.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it stand for 10 minutes, until foamy.

    2

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.

    3

Add the yeast mixture and oil to the flour mixture, then mix and begin to knead the dough.

    4

Knead the dough for 10-12 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If it's too sticky, add a little flour.

    5

Cover the dough with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    6

Divide the risen dough into 8 equal portions, then shape them into smooth balls.

    7

Place the buns on parchment paper, then cover, and let rise for another 15-20 minutes.

    8

Prepare a steamer, bring water to a boil, then place the buns inside, ensuring they don't touch each other.

    9

Steam the buns for 15 minutes, then turn off the heat, and let them rest under the lid for another 5 minutes.

    10

Serve warm, plain or with sweet and savory dishes.
