Maple syrup calzone freshly baked

Maple Syrup Calzone

Calzone is one of the best-known filled pizzas in Italian cuisine, prepared with a variety of fillings. This maple syrup version is a special dessert version that combines the creaminess of ricotta, the sweet smoothness of maple syrup, and the crunchiness of toasted walnuts. Cinnamon and vanilla lend a subtle aroma to the filling, while the crispy baked pizza dough provides the perfect contrast. This dessert calzone is the perfect choice to end a special dinner or as an afternoon treat. Tip: For an even richer flavor experience, sprinkle with powdered sugar after baking or drizzle with a little extra maple syrup.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). If using store-bought pizza dough, let it rest at room temperature for 10 minutes to make it easier to roll out.

    2

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough to about 1/8 inch (3-4 mm) thickness. Shape it into a large circle, then cut it in half.

    3

In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese with maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.

    4

Roughly chop the walnuts and toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, until fragrant.

    5

Grate the mozzarella cheese and mix it into the ricotta mixture, then add the toasted walnuts.

    6

Place the filling on one half of the dough, then fold the other half over it. Use a fork to press down the edges and seal the calzone well.

    7

In a small bowl, whisk the egg and brush it over the top of the calzone to help it turn a beautiful golden brown.

    8

Place the calzone on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.

    9

After baking, let it cool slightly, then drizzle with maple syrup and serve warm.
