Authentic Indian naan bread

Naan

Naan is one of the most well-known Indian breads, traditionally baked in a tandoor oven. This soft, pliable, and slightly crispy bread is the perfect accompaniment to curries, dhal, or other spicy dishes. In modern kitchens, it can easily be made in a skillet, so you can enjoy authentic Indian flavors at home. If you like garlic naan, simply brush it with melted butter and minced garlic after cooking!

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.

    2

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, yogurt, and olive oil.

    3

Pour in the yeast mixture and knead until you have a soft, pliable dough.

    4

Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    5

Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape them into balls.

    6

On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin, oval shape.

    7

Heat a dry skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Place the first naan dough into the hot pan.

    8

Cook for 1-2 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until golden brown spots appear.

    9

If you want garlic naan, brush the cooked naan with melted butter and minced garlic.

    10

Serve immediately with curry, dips, or your favorite Indian dishes.
