Papanasi, Romanian cottage cheese donut served with sour cream and jam

Papanasi

Papanasi is a traditional Romanian dessert, primarily made from cottage cheese, and served with sour cream and jam. It is one of the best-known Romanian desserts, found on restaurant menus throughout the country. Papanasi is a unique donut, shaped from a larger ring and a smaller ball placed on top. The light, cottage cheese dough and the sweet-and-sour jam create a perfect pairing, while the sour cream adds a creamy texture to the entire dessert. A simple, but great Romanian dessert that can be a favorite of any sweet tooth.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a bowl, combine the cottage cheese, egg, sugar, vanilla sugar, and salt.

    2

Add the flour and baking powder, and mix until you have a soft, manageable dough.

    3

Divide the dough into 4 portions. Shape each portion into a larger ball and a smaller ball (for the top).

    4

Shape the larger balls into rings with a hole in the center, creating a donut shape.

    5

Heat plenty of oil in a skillet over medium heat.

    6

Fry the donut-shaped papanasi and the small balls until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

    7

Remove them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

    8

Serve warm, topped with sour cream and jam, and dust with powdered sugar.
