Prepare the ingredients. Peel, core, and dice the pears into small cubes.
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and a pinch of salt.
Cut the cold butter into cubes. Add the butter to the flour mixture and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
Add the diced pears to the dough and mix thoroughly.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and then add the milk. Gradually add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined to form a dough.
Shape the dough into a disc and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Slightly flatten the top and use a sharp knife to cut crosswise slits into the top.
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
Let the scones cool slightly before serving.
