Sabaayad - Somali flatbread served

Sabaayad - Somali Flatbread

Sabaayad is a popular Somali flatbread, similar to Indian paratha or Arabic khubz. It is often eaten for breakfast with tea in Somalia, but also makes an excellent side dish with various sauces and meat dishes. Sabaayad is a soft, layered bread that is brushed with melted butter after cooking for an even richer flavor. Traditional recipes have been passed down through generations, and each family has its own version, which they proudly prepare for special occasions or everyday meals.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the oil and start mixing until combined.

    2

Gradually add the water while continuously kneading the dough. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes).

    3

Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes to allow the gluten to develop.

    4

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a thin circle, about 2 mm thick.

    5

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook each flatbread for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown spots appear.

    6

Brush each cooked flatbread with melted butter for added flavor and softness.

    7

Serve fresh and hot with your favorite sauce or tea.
