Salmon and avocado bao bun served

Salmon and Avocado Bao Buns

Originally from China, the bao bun, or steamed bun, has become a popular street food delicacy worldwide. Its fusion with Western flavors has made it truly popular – like this salmon and avocado version. Salmon is traditionally eaten raw or smoked in Japan, while avocado is a favorite "superfood" in Western cuisine. These two create a harmonious balance in this recipe, which is completed by fresh greens and a lemon-dill sauce. As the softness of the freshly steamed bao bun embraces the cold salmon and the creaminess of the avocado, the flavors almost melt in your mouth. This dish is a perfect choice for a light lunch, a healthy dinner, or even as a brunch dish. You can vary it with fresh cucumber, or make it even more exciting by replacing the dill with coriander.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Wash and dry the lettuce leaves, then tear them into smaller pieces. Peel, pit, and thinly slice the avocado. Slice the salmon into long, narrow strips.

    2

Prepare the dressing: in a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and finely chopped dill. This fresh, lemony dill sauce complements the salmon and avocado perfectly.

    3

Steam the bao buns in a bamboo steamer or using a strainer placed over a large pot. Cover and steam for 6-8 minutes, or until completely soft.

    4

Once the bao buns are soft, gently open them. Place some lettuce on the bottom half, then layer with avocado slices and salmon.

    5

Drizzle the assembled bao buns with the lemon-dill mayonnaise. Tip: for extra freshness, add a few drops of fresh lemon juice on top before serving.

    6

Sprinkle with black sesame seeds and garnish with microgreens. Serve immediately for the best taste!
