In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form the mixture into four equal patties.
In a hot skillet over medium-high heat, add olive oil and cook the patties on both sides until golden brown and cooked through.
Thinly slice the red onions. In a separate pan, sauté the red onions in olive oil until softened. Add the brown sugar and cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are caramelized, golden brown, and tender.
Toast the cut sides of the burger buns until lightly golden and crispy.
Place a slice of cheese on top of each cooked patty and let it melt in the skillet. You can cover the skillet for faster melting.
Assemble the burgers: On the bottom half of each bun, layer the iceberg lettuce, followed by the cheese-topped patty, caramelized red onions, and a generous drizzle of salted caramel sauce. Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.
