Seitan burger with fresh vegetables

Seitan Burger

Seitan, also known as 'wheat meat', has been a popular plant-based protein source in Asian cuisine for centuries. It is an excellent meat substitute for vegetarians and vegans as it is rich in protein and easily shaped. Seitan burger is a tasty alternative that gets a deep umami flavor thanks to soy sauce and smoked paprika. This recipe is perfect for anyone looking for a healthy yet filling meat-free burger.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Finely chop or grind the seitan in a food processor until you have a well-formed mixture.

    2

Finely chop the garlic and red onion.

    3

Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic for 3-4 minutes, until softened.

    4

Add the chopped seitan to the skillet and season with soy sauce, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes.

    5

Pour the seitan mixture into a bowl and let it cool for a few minutes.

    6

Add breadcrumbs and a beaten egg, then mix thoroughly until you have a mixture that holds its shape.

    7

With wet hands, form 4 patties. Place them on a tray and let them rest in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

    8

Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the seitan patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

    9

Toast the hamburger buns in a dry skillet or oven.

    10

Assemble the burgers: place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of the toasted bun, top with a seitan patty, a slice of tomato, then mustard and ketchup.

    11

Place the top half of the bun on top and serve immediately with a fresh salad or fries.
