Combine the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into four equal-sized patties.
In a hot skillet with olive oil, cook the patties on both sides until golden brown. Towards the end of cooking, brush them with BBQ sauce and let it caramelize slightly.
Thinly slice the red onion and caramelize it in a little olive oil until soft and sweet.
Toast the insides of the burger buns until crispy.
Assemble the burger: place the iceberg lettuce on the bottom half of the bun, top with the BBQ-glazed patty, then layer with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and sliced jalapeño peppers. Close with the top half of the bun.
