Spicy pickled herring in a jar

Spicy Pickled Herring

Spicy pickled herring is a Scandinavian delicacy with a special place in Nordic gastronomy. The strong chili peppers and the vinegar brine perfectly highlight the fish's natural flavor, while spices like mustard seeds and bay leaves add depth to the dish. In Nordic countries, it is traditionally served with rye bread or boiled potatoes, often as part of festive tables. This recipe is an excellent choice for those who love spicy, pickled fish dishes and want to bring a touch of Scandinavian flavor to their kitchen.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Rinse the herring fillets thoroughly under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

    2

Cut the herring fillets into approximately 3-4 cm pieces and place them in a large bowl.

    3

Sterilize the canning jars and lids in boiling water for 10 minutes, then let them dry completely.

    4

Thinly slice the red onion and garlic. Layer the herring fillets in the jars with the sliced red onion, garlic, and chili peppers.

    5

In a medium saucepan, combine the vinegar, water, salt, and sugar. Bring to a boil, then add the mustard seeds, black peppercorns, and bay leaves.

    6

Simmer the brine over low heat for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Let it cool slightly.

    7

Pour the lukewarm brine over the herring in the jars, ensuring the fish is completely submerged.

    8

Seal the jars and let them cool to room temperature. Then, refrigerate for at least 48 hours to allow the flavors to develop.

    9

The spicy pickled herring will taste best after 3-4 days of marinating, but it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
