Rinse the rice thoroughly in cold water several times until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents a sticky consistency.
In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil, then add the salt.
Pour in the rinsed rice and stir to ensure all the grains are submerged.
Bring to a boil again, then reduce the heat to low, and cover the saucepan.
Simmer, covered, for about 15 minutes, or until the rice has absorbed all the water.
Turn off the heat and let it rest, covered, for an additional 5 minutes to allow the grains to fully soften.
Fluff the rice with a fork, and if desired, add a little butter or olive oil for a richer flavor.
Serve immediately as a side dish with meats, vegetables, or sauces.
