Strawberry waffles served with fresh strawberries

Strawberry Waffles with Fresh Strawberries

Strawberry waffles are one of the most popular variations of sweet waffles worldwide. Although the classic Belgian waffle was rarely topped with fresh fruit originally, fresh strawberries have become an iconic addition in American and European versions. They are particularly popular in spring and summer when strawberries are fresh and fragrant. As the warmth of the freshly baked waffle meets the strawberries, the fruit juice melts gently into the grooves of the waffle - the scent and sight are appetizing in themselves. Every bite is balanced: the butteriness of the waffle and the tartness of the strawberries complement each other perfectly. Tip: for an even more intense flavor, you can toss the strawberries with a few drops of lemon juice and a little powdered sugar before serving. Never leave the green leaves on the strawberries - this degrades the presentation and is not edible!

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. This will be the dry component of your batter, and it's always a good idea to homogenize it beforehand.

    2

In another bowl, whisk the eggs, then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Make sure the butter is not hot, or it will scramble the eggs!

    3

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are fine. This ensures a light and airy waffle.

    4

Let the batter rest for 10 minutes. This allows the baking powder to activate, resulting in a fluffier waffle. While the batter rests, wash the strawberries, remove the stems, and slice them.

    5

Preheat your waffle iron and lightly grease it. Pour in a scoop of batter and cook for 4-5 minutes, or until golden brown. Be careful not to open the waffle iron too early, or the waffle may tear.

    6

Place the cooked waffle on a plate and top with fresh strawberries. Serve immediately for the freshest and juiciest flavor. You can also dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup, but they're delicious on their own.
