Suya spicy skewers served

Suya (Nigerian Spicy Beef Skewers)

Suya, one of Nigeria's most popular street foods, is traditionally grilled over charcoal. The dish's special feature is the peanut and spice mix, which provides an intense flavor experience. The origin of Suya dates back centuries, when Fulani herders started preparing this simple but tasty dish. Suya is the perfect choice for family barbecues, friendly gatherings, or a special dinner.

    Preparation Steps

    1

Soak the wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent them from burning during grilling.

    2

In a large bowl, combine the peanut flour, Hungarian sweet paprika, ground cayenne pepper, ground ginger, garlic powder, dried onion powder, and salt. This will be your Suya spice mix.

    3

Toss the thinly sliced beef with the lemon juice and olive oil, ensuring the meat is well coated.

    4

Dip the beef slices into the spice mix, making sure both sides are evenly coated.

    5

Thread the spiced beef slices onto the skewers, ensuring the slices do not overlap too much.

    6

Grill the skewers over hot charcoal or on a grill for about 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the meat is tender and nicely browned.

    7

Before serving, sprinkle the skewers with a little extra spice mix and serve with fresh vegetables or salad.
