Freshly baked tandoori bread

Tandoor Bread

Tandoor bread, also known as tandoori bread, is a type of flatbread cooked using an ancient baking method in a hot clay oven called a tandoor. Tandoor ovens originated in India and Central Asia and have become popular in numerous Middle Eastern and Asian cuisines over the centuries. The yogurt-enriched dough gives the bread a special softness, while baking in the hot oven results in a crispy crust. This bread is a perfect accompaniment to spicy curries, kebabs, or can be enjoyed on its own.

    Preparation Steps

    1

In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water with the dry yeast and sugar. Let it stand for 10 minutes, until the yeast is foamy.

    2

In a large bowl, sift the all-purpose flour, then mix in the salt.

    3

Pour in the yeast mixture, yogurt, and olive oil, then start kneading the dough.

    4

Knead the dough for about 10-15 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.

    5

Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

    6

Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions, then shape them into flat, oval-shaped discs.

    7

Preheat the oven to 482°F (250°C). If you have one, place a baking stone or cast-iron skillet in the oven.

    8

Place the breads on the hot baking surface and bake for 5-7 minutes, until they puff up and turn golden brown.

    9

Remove the breads and brush the tops with olive oil or butter. Serve fresh.
