Finely chop the onion and garlic. Rinse and finely chop the fresh basil.
In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion until translucent.
Add the garlic and sauté for another 1-2 minutes, being careful not to burn it.
Pour the tomato purée into the saucepan and mix well. Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Add salt, pepper, and sugar, then stir to combine. Adjust the seasonings to taste.
Stir in the fresh basil and cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the basil's aroma to infuse the sauce.
Serve the sauce warm with pasta, grilled meats, or vegetables. The sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
