Finely chop the onion and garlic to ensure the flavors blend well into the sauce.
In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion until translucent. Add the garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
Pour in the tomato sauce and stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
Add the capers and simmer the sauce over low heat for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the fresh, chopped basil.
Serve immediately with pasta, grilled vegetables, or meats. Alternatively, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
